Traditional Believes
The residents of Taoyaun City, other than the indigenous people who have their own believes, share the similar believes with the Minnan and Hakka immigrants in other regions of Taiwan. Believes are developed during the process of immigration and cultivation of the early generations, and different production methods led to different believes. The traditional believes worship various gods that protect the lives of people, the safety of the region, and agricultural success. People pray for peace and harvest in the rituals, and worship the Land Deity and Emperor of Agriculture who grant people of fertile land and harvest, Matsu who grants people of peace, protection against evil, and successful trades. On the other hand, most folk activities and folk arts are involved with folk believes and festivities, and are demonstrated at festivities, for instance temple fairs, or the sacrifice rituals. These activities are both religious and recreational for participants.
In the traditional society, folk festivals are usually involved with the farming cultures, and main events are organized in slack seasons when most people in the farming villages are free from agricultural chores. Some festivities are organized with fairs for villagers to exchange or to purchase various products. Festivities therefore, are both recreational and functional in the traditional societies.
