Taoyuan City Council

¡@The development of Taoyuan started in the 18th century during the Qing Dynasty. The pioneers arrived on the island from Fujien, China. They lived off farming, and sacrificed to build a new home here. These early residents planted a lot of peach trees in the area, which gave it the name ¡§Tao-Ah-Yuan¡¨ (meaning Peach Garden).

The City Representative Council of Taoyuan, formerly known as the Town Representative Council, was established in March, 1946 after Taiwan¡¦s restoration. It was not until April 21, 1975, when Taoyuan Town was upgraded to a county-administered city, that the 9th term of the Town Representatives was renamed to the 1st term of City Representatives. The system is still in effect today.

After more than 50 years of local autonomy, the city of Taoyuan has built a strong foundation on which it can become a prosperous modern city. The endeavors of the past and current representatives unquestionably contributed greatly to the success of the city.
